I chose this book as it was the direct sequel to Ender's Game, one of my most cherished books
Genre
The genre for the book is young audult science fiction. the young adult concept revolves Ender, Alessandria, Arba, and Valentine. Ender goes from the hardened soldier he was training for, to a growing boy who falls in love and all that stuff. Alessandria is also a girl her is escaping from her mother and is trying to find who she is. Arba is a young boy who already has an adult's job. He says with Ender and has disscusions with him. valentine is parenting Ender and taking care of him. the science fiction concept comes from the ideathat this book is set in the future. Humans were just at war with an alien speicies and are colonizing to different planets. Humans have achieved light speed, life on the asteroid belt, and gravity simulation.
Story
A direct sequel to Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Ender in Exile revolves around Ender, a 13 year old kid who destroyed the threat of an alien race playing a tactical simulation game at a military school/base the asteroid "Eros". The IF (International Fleet) sees an oppertunity to colinize. Now Ender has a choice of going back to Earth and trying to live his life as the savior of mankind, or going to the new planet to be governor. meanwhile, on Earth his cibling, Peter and Valentine, have sucessfully, and indirectly, taken over the world (or the Hegemon). uncontent with having herself and Ender living as Peter's pawns, Valentine decides that she should go with Ender to the colony. In the slums of Italy lie two other future colonist that with also play a crucial role in Ender's life. a 30 year old woman named Dorabella Touscan and her daughter Alessandria, who is now 14. Dorabella threw away her life when she conceived Alsessandria (in hopes of escaping from her cruel mother) and now is looking for an escape from Monopoli. She also sees an opputunity for herself, as Ender could fall in love with Alessandria.
Several months later, on Eros, the shuttle for the new world is about to leave. Some shuttles have already made it to the planet no dubbed "Shakespeare", but this one will be going at light speed. Ender is introduced to everyone, including Alessandria and Admiral Quincy Morgan, the captain of the ship. Several week after the ship leaves (a few years on earth), Peter emails Valentine about what has happened while she was gone. He speaks of and underground leader dubbed Achilles of which he and Ender's old friends are opposing. He sends sends this email under max security (a fingerprint scanner that can only be accessed by Valentine), and accidentally disables the ships communication for 2 hours (a few days on earth). This infuriates Admiral Morgan, claiming that Ender is committing mutiny threatening to court martial him. Ender, remaining clam, sees how power hungry Admiral Morgan is, but calmly explains the situation to him and, in fact, even invites with to see the Shakespeare play that was being reenacted by the colonists. whilst watching it Morgan fell in love with Dorabella, or, more specifically, she made fall in love with her. Alexandria also falls in love with Ender, but the same cannot be said in reverse. Dorabella helps speed up this process of growing the relationship between the two, as she expects Morgan to be the power behind Ender's governership. Of course Ender sees right through this and, politely and subtly, rejects her.
The ship is about to land on Shakespeare and Admiral Morgan is ready to "overthrow" Ender. But at the last minute, Ender dresses up in him military uniform, delivers an impressive speech, and over all stomps on Morgan. and it didn't hurt that Ender gave him a message from the IF saying that if he committed questionable actions, Morgan would be sent to Eros to be court martialed for mutiny. Meanwhile, Dorabella is staying with Morgan to move to new planets, and that means that Alessandria wont be going anywhere...yet. Ender reminds Alessandria that 16 year olds are allowed to stay on Shakespeare without parents consent, and sort of dumps her at the same time. Dorabella does no take this well, in fact she goes in a sort of rage mode (you don't need to know the specifics). fortunately, she is out of Alessandria's life for good. Ender continues his journey looking for truth behind the alien race he destroyed, and Shakespeare, a planet overrun with secrets, is an excellent place to start that search.
Big Ideas
The two big ideas of Ender in Exile are struggle for power and struggle for understanding. The book seems to make strange transitions, but they still remain dominant. Ender's Game ended (spoiler)with Ender playing a simulation game involving him commandeering several ships against millions others. Of course, Ender won, but it was only after he won that he realized that he was fighting the war between humans and aliens(spoiler). Ender spends the rest of his days trying to understand his former enemy. This study is interrupted by Ender's decision to go to Shakespeare. Both Admiral Morgan and Dorabella have a lust for power. Admiral Morgan believes himself to be "the power behind Ender's throne", elevating himself above Ender. Ender's modesty didn't hurt the growth of obsession. for the same reason as Morgan's, Dorabella also wanted power and, in fact was motivated enough to marry Morgan. Dorabella was disappointed with her previous husband (who is now dead), a chore boy of the italian mafia and an excuse to get away from her mother. of course, he had no money and died before Alessandria could even remember him. After landing on shakespeare, however Ender continues his search in the caves of Shakespeare.
Conflict
The conflict revolves around the two main ideas (struggle for power and struggle for understanding), but mainly the first one. Admiral Morgan and Dorabella serve as a sort of antagonist, wanting power. Really, they want indirect power, or "ruling behind the throne", and achieve this by marrying and setting up Alessandria with Ender. What Ender tries to do is subtly "dodge" these attacks. That even included rejecting Alessandria. After the shuttle landed on Shakespeare, Ender (as governor) took complete control of every thing and handed Morgan a message from the IF stating that any suspicious activity would have him court martialed for mutiny. after seeing this, of course, Admiral Morgan loses all intreats in gaining Ender's power and decides to take new orders of moving to the next planet. Dorabella decides to stay with him and she doesn't want alessandria to go anywhere. But she is 16 and she can do what she wants, just not without a raging final temper tantrum from her mother. After this the conflict shifts back to the search for truth where a formicoid (name of the "evil" alien race, by the way) species.
